چکیده

Ice cloud detection from AMSU-A, MHS, and HIRS satellite instruments inferred by cloud profiling radar" (2014). NASA Publications. Paper 175. An algorithm for ice cloud detection aided by support vector machine (AID-SVM) is presented. The AID-SVM algorithm is applied and tested for the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A, microwave humidity sounder (MHS), and high resolution infrared radiation sounder (HIRS) instruments onboard NOAA-19 satellite. The algorithm is based on satellite brightness temperature measurements and developed as well as validated by using collocated ice/no-ice cloud information acquired from the CloudSat cloud-profiling radar. The algorithm is tested over both ocean and land surfaces. Overall, the results exhibit very promising potential to acquire ice/no-ice cloud information using the passive satellite sensors. It is found that infrared satellite sensor such as HIRS is more efficient in detecting ice clouds than the counterpart microwave satellite sensors. Furthermore, the combined measurements using microwave/infrared synergy perform no better than the infrared-only measurements.

AMSU-B Observations of Mixed-Phase Clouds over Land

Measurements from passive microwave satellite instruments such as the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit B (AMSU-B) are sensitive to both liquid and ice cloud particles. Radiative transfer modeling is exploited to simulate the response of the AMSU-B instrument to mixed-phase clouds over land. The plane-parallel radiative transfer model employed for the study accounts for scattering and absorption...

Analysis of Arctic clouds by means of hyper-spectral satellite

Polar satellite measurements provide frequent overpass on the Arctic area and high spatial resolution, but the cloud parameter retrieval and their detection is very difficult at high latitudes. In great part the Arctic surface is covered by snow and ice, reducing the visible contrast between clouds and the surface. Also, often there are strong surface temperature inversions and during the winte...

Fingerprints of a riming event on cloud radar Doppler spectra: observations and modeling

Radar Doppler spectra measurements are exploited to study a riming event when precipitating ice from a seeder cloud sediment through a supercooled liquid water (SLW) layer. The focus is on the “golden sample” case study for this type of analysis based on observations collected during the deployment of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program’s (ARM) mobile facility AMF2 at Hyytiälä, Finlan...

A multi-scale convolutional neural network for automatic cloud and cloud shadow detection from Gaofen-1 images

The reconstruction of the information contaminated by cloud and cloud shadow is an important step in pre-processing of high-resolution satellite images. The cloud and cloud shadow automatic segmentation could be the first step in the process of reconstructing the information contaminated by cloud and cloud shadow. This stage is a remarkable challenge due to the relatively inefficient performanc...

The Role of Emissivity in the Detection of Arctic Night Clouds

Detection of clouds over polar areas from satellite radiometric measurements in the visible and IR atmospheric window region is rather difficult because of the high albedo of snow, possible ice covered surfaces, very low humidity, and the usual presence of atmospheric temperature inversion. Cold and highly reflective polar surfaces provide little thermal and visible contrast between clouds and ...
